Alumni Spotlight: Alex Mackinnon

by Jason Booth

Alex Mackinnon, a right-handed pitcher who graduated from the program back in 2016, was as reliable as they come during his time with Team Ontario.

In his final year with Team O he led his team in nearly every pitching statistic including innings pitched, wins, strikeouts and ERA before taking his talents to Division I, Niagara University.

He carried that momentum on the bump right into his freshman year of 2017 with the Purple Eagles where he pitched 36 innings, picking up 20 strikeouts while getting some work in against some of the top programs, such as Virginia and Baylor.

One of the highlights of his college career came last year during the COVID shortened season where he secured the victory for the Purple Eagles on opening night. On the road taking on the No. 14 team in the country, Florida State, Mackinnon pitched the final two innings, retiring all six batters while striking out five to complete the upset by a score of 3-1

Last year was Mackinnon's senior year but with players being granted an extra year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic, he is back in Niagara for a 5th and final season where he will use his veteran leadership to try and lead the Purple Eagles to their first MAAC championship in program history.
