Brett Johnston signs with Marshalltown CC (NJCAA D1)

by Jason Booth

“Team O really cares about their players”, 17-year-old Outfielder Brett Johnston told us reflecting on his time with Team Ontario.

Next season, Johnston will be joining the Marshalltown Community College baseball program (NJCAA Division 1). This comes after a long commitment to baseball, starting with the Uxbridge Grizzlies as his local team. He later, wanting to play at a higher level, played for the Newmarket

Elite team for one year. It was the Covid 19 lockdowns that encouraged him to play in the Canadian Premier Baseball League, and he knew that Team Ontario was the perfect fit because of the amazing coaching staff and impeccable facility.

Johnston credits Team Ontario for being prepared to take this jump. During his three years in the program, he has played against all levels including all levels of college baseball. This helped him to decide as to where he felt he wanted to be. Seeing and playing alongside those levels inspired him and allowed him to see how he could fit into the college baseball world.

Johnston joins the team as part of a very strong recruiting class and we look forward to seeing what they do next season. This next challenge is exciting, and Johnston can’t wait to start at Marshalltown. He is most looking forward to the school baseball experience. He will also be studying elementary education.

When he looks back on his three years in the program he loved that there was amazing chemistry throughout the organization, with teammates and coaches. “The coaching staff has always been there to help us with anything, from tweaking our swing to contacting colleges. Team O really cares about their players.”

He encourages younger players to start looking into the process for school, as it is never too early. Don’t feel like you have to wait to find out more about what you want your college experience to look like.

We send Johnston off knowing he has made great use of the Team Ontario program and wish him success!
