Liam Wedge commits to Elmira College

by Jason Booth

Team Ontario is excited to announce that 18U right-hander Liam Wedge has committed to Elmira College, an NCAA Division III program in Elmira, New York. The Soaring Eagles baseball club competes in the Empire 8 Conference with five teams that are all based out of New York, not far from the Canadian border.

"Elmira stood out to me because of their strong Health Science programs and the relationship I built with head coach. I chose to commit to Elmira because I felt it was the best fit for me, both on and off the field," says Wedge, a Newmarket native.

Wedge joined the program in 2019 and impressed with his ability to attack the strike zone and induce weak contact. The 6-foot, 165-pound pitcher will look to make an immediate impact with the Soaring Eagles who already feature two Canadians on their roster.

Wedge has worked extremely hard over the past six-plus months with our pitching coordinators to put himself in a position to compete at the NCAA level. Despite all the challenges coronavirus brought during that time, Wedge continued to put in the work and the Team Ontario coaching staff could not be more excited to see that paying off.

"With all the challenges this year provided, I wouldn't have had this opportunity without the support of my family and coaches," added Wedge. "Staying focused on achieving my goals and utilizing the resources provided by Team O is what made this possible."

Beyond his hard-work at The Dugout and virtually, Wedge has been a force in the classroom throughout high school as he's been an honour roll student every year since entering post-secondary.

Congratulations Liam and we look forward to following your progress at the collegiate level.
