Team Ontario announces addition of Coach Shawn Lynn

by Jason Booth

Team Ontario is extremely excited to announce the addition of Shawn Lynn to the organization's coaching staff. Shawn will work specifically with our 17U program although his expertise will be lend a hand across the entire organization.

Shawn now has 21 years of coaching experience at the elite level and 4 years of ownership experience under his belt.

Currently Shawn joins the Team Ontario Astros and is excited to share all his years of knowledge to help Team Ontario’s organization and continue to help players achieve their dreams.

After two years as a player on Team Canada, Shawn was offered a full scholarship to attend Seminole State College (Oklahoma-ranked 1st in the nation), undeniably one of the top baseball programs in the U.S.

Shawn led the Trojans pitching staff with a remarkable 11-1 record. The Trojans finished the season 76-5 overall, which led to an appearance at the World Series where Shawn had the opportunity to play in front of more than 22,000 fans, an experience that Shawn describes as one his greatest baseball moments.

In 1998, Shawn was drafted by the MLB Toronto Blue Jays, and following a successful minor league camp, he was offered a minor league contract with the Blue Jays.

He was also drafted again in 1999 by the San Diego Padres. However, after a career-ending arm injury, Shawn elected to return to the Toronto area and commence his career as a coach of elite-level baseball.

Beginning as a hitting/assistant coach for the PBLO Toronto Ravens and then the Welland Renegades (of the PBLO at the time), Shawn quickly made his way up to a head coach position. Shawn then moved on to help create a new 18U elite baseball program with Tom Valcke (CEO of the Canadian Baseball hall of fame) out of St. Mary’s Ontario. The team was called the Canadian Baseball Hall of Famers. Shawn remained head coach for two consecutive years.

Shawn also held a head coaching position with the Canadian Thunderbirds organization and became the owner of the Ontario T-Birds. In 2011, he joined the Ontario Royals as head coach of the 18u team, pitching coordinator, head of college placement, and eventually co-owner of the program.

One of Shawn’s key roles with the Royals was head of College Placement. This critical role included assessing the best fitting college opportunity for players as they progressed towards high school graduation. Shawn has placed over 80 players over the years. He continually expands his relationships with U.S. and Canadian college/university coaches, and makes that all-important coach-to-coach contact as each player identifies potential opportunities to pursue his academic and baseball aspirations.

Throughout his career, Shawn has had the opportunity of coaching some of Ontario’s premier players as well as working with top coaches across the Province. Shawn was also selected to coach the only PBLO all-star game.

Shawn was an honourable mention as one of the most influential coaches in Canada for 2017. Shawn also has assisted with several Major League Baseball Scouting Bureau camps, as well tryouts for the Ontario youth team.

Team Ontario is extremely excited to have Shawn Lynn join the organization and look forward to watching our players develop under his watch.
